The first rumors of The Papery’s troubles appeared on ArlNow last September. When questioned, ArlNow was told by The Papery that the store was low on stock, and should be replenishing new stock soon. Well - that was last September. Those shelves haven’t seen new stock since.
When I stopped in The Papery in January looking for a card to congratulate friends on the expected arrival of their baby, I scratched my head in disbelief when an employee pointed me to the section where the only baby-related cards I found were “Congratulations on your new adoption” cards.
Last weekend, I noticed that Papery had a ‘50% off Entire Store” sale, and many of their shelves were cleaned off. I asked an employee if they were going out of business, to which he replied that no, they are just making way for new inventory.
Last night, @snackdecision tipped ArlNow and I off to the fact that The Papery’s current space has been marked “For Lease” by CBRE, which is Clarendon Common’s Real Estate Leasing and Management firm.
Also noted by @hoborocks is the fact that The Papery’s website no longer exists.
